The FDA approved Smartlipo in November of 2006, and Dr. Starkey was one of the first three physicians, (and was the first female physician), to train in and perform Smartlipo™ in North America. Since that time she not only has been performing Smartlipo™ procedures, but she also demonstrates this procedure in her office to other interested physicians.
Smartlipo™ is the procedure that changed the face of liposuction. It is the only FDA approved laser lipolysis. It enables the treatment of cellulite and fat deposits. Smartlipo™ dissolves the body fat with heat. It also gives a skin tightening that cannot be achieved with other procedures. Smartlipo™ allows successful treatment of delicate areas such as the face and chin, which are difficult to treat with other procedures. The patients receive local anesthetic and are awake during the procedure. A tumescent solution is infiltrated and numbs the area. Patients are comfortable and recovery is much faster.

Smartlipo™ is ideal for anyone of a medium to slightly large size who wants to contour his or her body. It can also treat areas such as the face, chin, arms, waist, thighs and hips.
HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?
On average, about 2-3 hours per session
WHAT IS THE LONG TERM OUTCOME FOR MOST PEOPLE
Like traditional liposuction, you will need patience to see the final results. The incisions are so small that no stitches are required and there are minimal to no scars. The full effects may not be evident for 6 months to a year. The more fat that you had removed, the longer it will take to achieve optimal results, because the skin has to adapt to a more radical change in shape.
DO I HAVE TO STAY IN THE HOSPITAL?
No, Smartlipo™ is performed as an in-office procedure, under local anesthesia. The short recuperation is done in the comfort of your home.
WHAT IF I’VE ALREADY HAD REGULAR LIPOSUCTION?
Laser Lipolysis with Smartlipo™ may be extremely useful for revisiting areas of the body previously treated with traditional liposuction. If there is further sculpting or smoothing out of areas, Smartlipo™ would be ideal. And it is fantastic for skin tightening in areas of laxity, when a person is looking for toning and tightening.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF SMARTLIPO™?
Smartlipo™ has dual action; it tightens the skin as it removes the fat, which traditional liposuction cannot. Initial studies have shown skin tightening of about 40%. Other advantages are quicker healing, safer procedure, and less downtime.
HOW MUCH DOES SMARTLIPO™ COST?
The cost is the same as traditional lipo-suction and depends on the number of areas to be treated. It starts at about $3000.00 to $4000.00 for one area, with additional areas ranging from $1000.00 to $2000.00. The cost of chin and jowls is $2000.00.
